A Church Girl’s Recovery: Seasons of a Pornography Struggle

The average age a child encounters pornography is eleven, and by fourteen, most children have already been exposed—even Christians. I was a part of that statistic. Pornography is foreign. Intriguing. Maybe even glamorous. But all vicious creatures eventually show their predator nature. Throughout this book, I rely on personal experiences, memories, my private journals, metaphor, family, and the church community to journey through my fourteen-year recovery while set in the mountain town of Colorado Springs, Colorado.

I intentionally wander through some of the most uncomfortable subjects—in a non-graphic way—to find light and truth. I address depression, suicidal thoughts, anxiety, abstinence, identity in Christ, racism, sexual conflict in marriage, and of course pornography. I reflect on these awkward and difficult subjects not to hinder readers, but to bring darkness into light.

Words on A Church Girl’s Recovery

“[Martinez-Herbert’s] anger (passion and compassion) for those in captivity is evident throughout this honest, vulnerable, and weighty writing.”

—Bill Gandy, Former Baptist Student Union Director at the United States Air Force Academy

“ . . . under Martinez-Herbert’s deft and lyrical hands, her story melds faith, family, and, above all, love—pure and vulnerable, wise and constant— into a searingly honest tribute to the frailties of the flesh and the beauty of the dogged soul.”

—Kathryn Winograd, author of  Slow Arrow: Unearthing the Frail Children
